Japanese company U-TEC (headquarters: Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture, Japan), which develops and manufactures products such as charge measuring devices, has developed a technique for measuring the charge amount of powders and droplets in gases. This technology can be used in the field of electrostatic spraying. By detecting the charge amount of the paint droplets in the spray, it is expected to improve the coating adhesion efficiency (coating efficiency). The company has started providing measurement and analysis services since January 2015. It is said that about 10 companies, including car manufacturers, are using the service. The service is priced at 200,000 yen per day (excluding tax).
Electrostatic spraying technology is widely used in the automotive body painting and other fields, spraying charged paint mist to the painting surface during operation. The paint will be absorbed on the coating surface with the help of electrostatics, enabling efficient coating. However, U-TEC stated that in electrostatic spraying, the sprayed paint will not adhere to 2 to 3 percent and will eventually be treated as waste liquid. If the charge amount of the paint droplet can be measured, the distribution of the charge amount can be grasped, and the coating conditions such as voltage applied to the paint, spray pressure, and paint discharge amount can be easily optimized.
The measurement of charge quantity utilizes the "Faraday Cage" principle, which is widely used in charge detection. In a specific operation, the charged substance is attracted to the inner tube of a double-layered circular tube made of mutually insulated conductors, and the total charge amount is measured on the basis of the resultant electrostatic potential difference. Then by measuring the weight of the charged material, the charge per unit weight is obtained. In addition, if a probe with a slim double tube structure is inserted into the paint spray area and measured at multiple locations, the distribution of the charge amount can be grasped.
U-TEC has previously developed a device that measures the amount of charge of carbon powders such as photocopiers, and has also used its technology. However, when there is a charged matter such as powder and liquid droplets between the inner tube and the outer tube, the insulating property cannot be ensured. Therefore, the company developed air flow between the inner tube and the outer tube so as to inward. The inside of the tube guides the unique technology of the charged material. Han Tingyong, director of the Element Technology Development Center at the company’s R&D division, said that “devices that can measure the charge of small droplets in gas should have no other homeâ€. In addition, since the charged amount of dust and the like in the air can also be detected, the technology can not only improve the efficiency of electrostatic spraying but also improve the efficiency of the dust collection apparatus. The company said that in the future, it will try to reduce the impact of free ions trapped together with the coating and reduce the amount of attraction required for measurement from about 10 mg to about 2 mg and 3 mg.
